By identifying the gut microbiome as an active player in the effects mediated by GLP-1 instead of a mere passive factor, this review puts forth a conceptual framework designed to clarify the variability in therapeutic responses and to inform the creation of personalized GLP-1 strategies that take the microbiome into account
