I really love a 19th century miniature portrait

What I find especially amazing is the vessel inside of which this figure snuggly fits--the bottom is carved of wood

He thought it likely a mirror carried by someone in the military small, solid, and seeming pretty much indestructible, it seems very much suited for life in the trenches.
