I presume it is a mother hidden somewhere there under this wide and ambling drape of cloth--an unusual expanse as far as I've seen

I don't know the maker or the context in which it came to be perhaps a math class at MIT! Second half 20th century I presume, and clad in a thin coat of mustard colored paint.
