and most definitely if I found toothpaste being sold in a great looking ceramic jar I would most certainly scoop it right up--as someone else did with this at more than 100 years ago

For me, they feel like small, singular treasures, with the handwritten names and sketches of their onetime owner (or numerous owners) animating their end pages like escapist fantasies in counterpoint to, or sometimes inspired by, the lessons inside.
